Randall Horton's Hook Wins GLCA New Writers Award for 2017

We are incredibly proud to acknowledge that Randall Horton’s Hook has won the Great Lakes College Association New Writers Award for 2017 in the category of creative nonfiction. Other titles earning the GLCA New Writers Award this year include Nate Marshall’s Wild Hundreds in the category of poetry, and Charles Boyer’s History’s Child in the category of fiction.

 

As a small press, we consider this recognition a great honor, extending our congratulations to Randall and our gracious thanks to the Great Lakes College Association.

A 'Thank You' + An Update

We’d like to take a moment to thank Pen & Brush for hosting our dual book launch this past Friday for You’re the Most Beautiful Thing That Happened by Arisa White, and Say Something Nice About Me by Sara Schaff. Arisa’s book is now available online through Small Press DistributionSay Something Nice About Me will be available to the public through SPD come November 1st.

 

Many thanks, as well, to our wonderful designers, Mike Miller and Isabella Giancarlo, whose time and effort ensured these books printed just as beautifully as they read.

An Update on Our New Titles for 2016

Despite a long radio silence, we here at Augury Books have been hard at work preparing two new books for a late 2016 release. Kenyon Review Call for Submissions

The Kenyon Review is looking for poetry, fiction, essays, and drama involving science, ecology, and the environment for a special issue to be published in Sept/Oct 2016. Surrounding this special issue, the Kenyon Review will host an online discussion of writers, editors, and scientists on the question of what makes science writing literary. One Month Left to Apply for the Sarabande Writing Residency

Located at the Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest in Louisville, Kentucky, the Sarabande Writing Residency offers an annual residency to writers of poetry, fiction, or creative nonfiction. The residency includes a two-to six-week stay in a private cottage, as well as a $500 travel stipend. Sarabande Books, founded in 1994, publishes works in poetry, short fiction, and essay, hosting about 225 readings, workshops, and lectures per year.

Museo de la Palabra Micro Fiction Contest

The Museo de la Palabra has recently announced its third short tales contest! This edition’s theme is “Words and Freedom.” The Micro stories Award aims to represent people, cultures and nations of many different traditions. In the past two editions of the competition, over twenty thousand stories were submitted from upwards of a hundred different countries. The competition is free to enter and the overall first prize for best story is $20,000. The Museo de la Palabra, a Palace in the heart of the Cervantine route, stands as a place for study and exchange, and remains an emblem of the Fundación César Egido Serrano. Six Days Left to Submit: Gulf Coast’s Barthelme Prize and Prize in Translation

There are only a few more days to submit work to Gulf Coast‘s Barthelme Prize for Short Prose and 2015 Prize in Translation.

The Barthelme Prize is open to pieces of prose poetry, flash fiction, and micro-essays of 500 words or fewer. Established in 2008 after American postmodernist author Donald Barthelme, the contest awards its winner $1,000 and publication in the journal. Two honorable mentions will be awarded $250. All entries will be considered for online publication. Prose author and journalist Steve Almond is this year’s judge.

This season, the 2015 Gulf Coast Prize in Translation is open to fiction and nonfiction in translation. Akin to the Barthelme Prize, one winner will receive $1,000 and journal publication; two honorable mentions will receive $250; all will be considered for online publication. This year’s judge is Ammiel Alcalay, the poet, critic and translator, among many other titles.

Randall Horton Featured in 2015 PEN World Voices Anthology

We would like to congratulate Randall Horton on having an excerpt from Hook: A Memoir through Letters featured in the 2015 PEN World Voices Online Anthology. Hook is forthcoming from Augury Books in 2015. The PEN collection is comprised of prose, poetry, and dramatic writing from the participants of this year’s World Voices Festival. Among the other authors included are Nathalie Handal, Zoe Pilger, and Cormac James.

PEN’s World Voices Festival, running from May 4th to the 10th, celebrates literature from all over the globe. This year’s theme, On Africa, strives to make heard the voices of contemporary African artists.
